Kampin Laulu Chamber Choir presents Sounding Island, a concert that brings together works exploring themes of the power of music, comfort, and even divinity. The journey begins with a wedding atmosphere, as Jyrki Linjama's rhythmic Eskon häälaulu (Esko's Wedding Song), set to the text by Aleksis Kivi, transforms the bride's nervousness into joy through the music and dance of the celebration. In the Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist's work Bara du går över markerna (Only When You Cross the Fields), the footsteps of a beloved resonate as music.
Texts from William Shakespeare’s plays are featured in the works of three composers: the English romantic Ralph Vaughan Williams’ choral classic Three Shakespeare Songs and the modern Finnish composers Juhani Komulainen and Ulf Långbacka. From Shakespeare's dream worlds, the concert transitions to the divine dimension of music, explored through the sounds of Orlando di Lasso's Renaissance motet Musica Dei donum optimi.
Finally, the concert delves into themes of eternity, culminating in the Norwegian composer Martin Ødegaard’s 2014 piece Love me. The work is based on Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis’s motet If ye love me, which Ødegaard’s composition blends with Norwegian and Sámi folk melodies. The unique character of the piece arises from this combination of melodies and the solo violin that merges with the choir's sound. The soloist for the concert is violinist Alina Kivivuori, known from the folk music group Frigg. The concert is conducted by Kampin Laulu's artistic director, Saara Aittakumpu.
The concert is part of the Seasonal Concerts of Choral Music.
