The life’s work of Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–1377), a prominent figure in the medieval art world, continues to astonish with its diversity and vitality. Composed during an extremely dark period in European history, Machaut’s music combines high-level theoretical knowledge, exceptional mastery of poetry, and a taste for experimentation across all genres.
The Messe de Notre Dame, composed in honor of the Virgin Mary, is justifiably one of the most renowned works of the 14th century. As the first complete polyphonic mass composed by a single author, it showcases masterful four-part writing, making it one of the most significant musical achievements of the ars nova style. The mass was composed in Reims between 1362 and 1363 and continued to be sung regularly even after Machaut’s death in 1377. During Machaut’s lifetime, it was believed that the continued performance of the mass was a crucial part of the effort to save his soul.
To complete the portrait of the composer, Messe de Notre Dame will be performed alongside secular works by Guillaume de Machaut, all of which belong to the tradition of courtly love, or fin' amor.
