At the turn of the 20th century, Vienna was a hotbed of modern thought, where the German-language lied played a central role. Gustav Mahler infused his songs with enchantment, using lush orchestral arrangements that his successors refined into chamber music-like sensitivity. The texts played a crucial role in this mental leap, with both Mahler and Schönberg stretching the imagination through the folk poems of Des Knaben Wunderhorn ("The Boy's Magic Horn"). Alma Mahler, a composition student of Zemlinsky, was rapidly becoming a new master of the lied before her husband, Gustav, forbade her from composing.
In Tapiola Sinfonietta's "Luxus Liederabend," led by Taavi Oramo, top Finnish lied performers will present a program brimming with the transformative energy of the early 20th century.
