Pierrot Lunaire (Moonstruck Pierrot) is an avant-garde melodrama by Arnold Schönberg, first performed in Berlin in 1912. The work is written for soprano and a chamber ensemble consisting of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, with text by Albert Giraud. Having secured its place as a cult classic, the piece follows the story of the character Pierrot, exploring themes of love, madness, and death. The surreal atmosphere is created by the soprano's speech-song (Sprechstimme), where the singer's voice hovers between speaking and singing. Maria Ylipää's exceptional stage presence and Carl Knif's stunning direction guide the audience into Pierrot's mad world.
Additionally, the concert will feature works from or inspired by the cultural melting pot of early 20th-century Berlin, including pieces from the series Babylon Berlin, Spoliansky, and Marzi Nyman.
