SCHOOL CHOIR COMPETITION
Choirs from junior, middle and high schools, music schools and colleges are all welcome to take part in VocalEspoo’s international School Choir Competition. Enthusiastically received at our previous VocalEspoo festival, the competition will now be held for the second time at the Espoo Cultural Centre in Tapiola on June 6, 2016. Interesting repertoire, entertaining interpretations, light-hearted fun and games and above all the pleasure of singing together are all things to look forward to again this year.
Rules of the School Choir Competition
The International School Choir Competition will be held by the Espoo Music Festivals Association on June 6, 2016.
School, music school and college choirs of all sizes are eligible to take part in the competition. There will be four competition classes, one for each year group: 6–9, 10–12, 13–15 and 16–19. The year group of each choir will be determined according to the age of the majority of its singers. Classes may if necessary be combined.
Application is by filling in the form between December 1, 2015 and midnight (Finnish time) on April 30, 2016. Not more than 44 choirs will be accepted, basically in order of application, but so that all the classes are, if possible, viable. All the applicants will be informed by email.
The detailed competition schedule will be decided by lot and posted on the competition website on May 3, 2016. The choirs will perform their competition programme to an audience and a jury, one age group at a time, on Monday June 6 at the Espoo Cultural Centre. The jury will announce the prize-winning choirs by class at the end of the day.
Each choir’s total performance of repertoire of its own choice should last 8–10 minutes, including entering and leaving the stage. A microphone may be used for a solo, but otherwise the performance must be acoustic. Accompanying instruments are permitted, and there is no limit to their number, but the choir will be responsible for all the platform arrangements these require. The organiser will provide a concert grand piano. The jury will have the right to interrupt a performance should the time limit be exceeded, or to penalise a programme that is too short.
- Participation fee
The participation fee is €60 per choir and should be paid to Espoon musiikkifestivaalit, IBAN: FI60 8000 1770 8312 96, BIC: DABAFIHH after the choir has been accepted to participate the competition. The application should be marked School Choir Competition and state the name of the choir, the name of the contact person and the age group. Failure to pay the participation fee will be regarded as a cancellation.
A total of €3,000 will be awarded in prizes as decided by the jury. Each participating choir will receive a diploma. Choirs will also be sent written jury feedback after the competition. The jury reserves the right to not to distribute all prizes.
The competition jury will consist of Jonna Vehmanen, music pedagogue, composer-arranger and choir leader, and Tuukka Haapaniemi, ensemble singer and bass.
- Expenses, fees and languages
Each choir will be responsible for its own travel, accommodation, meals and other expenses. The organiser has the right, without paying compensation, to photograph, record, broadcast, film and televise performances and to post photos and recordings of them on the Internet. The official competition languages are Finnish and English.
